Dance artists Tom Truss and Matthew Cumbie present the immersive performance, Rewritten, a retelling of the secret intimacy between Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville.

Three Decembers Opera premieres Thursday

CHATHAM, N.Y. — On Thursday, July 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, July 23 at 1 p.m. the Berkshire Opera presents Three Decembers. Based on a play by Terrence McNally, the story follows a family of a famous Broadway actress and her two adult children through three decades— 1986, 1996, 2006— as they grapple with AIDS, addiction, dysfunction, and deceit.

Starring a cast of three: Mezzo Adriana Zabala as Madeline Mitchell, Soprano Monica Dewey as Beatrice, and Baritone Theo Hoffman as Charlie. With music by Jake Heggie, Libretto by Gene Scheer, conducted by Christopher James Ray in this new production by Beth Greenberg.

Immersive, Genre-bending Performance Investigates Historical Gay Love

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire County Historical Society presents Rewritten, an immersive performance that will explore the silenced and hidden intimate relationship between authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville. Performances are at 7:45 p.m. on July 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31. 

Tickets are $10 for BCHS members, $15 for non-members, EBT card holders receive 50% off, 12 and under are free. Performances will take place at Arrowhead, Herman Melville’s home where he wrote the novel Moby-Dick. A special $25 ticket includes both the performance and a tour of Arrowhead at a later date; tours will not be available on performance evenings. Rewritten is presented by dance artists Tom Truss and Matthew Cumbie, in collaboration with the Berkshire Pulse Center for Creative Arts. Drawing on their lives, work, and remaining letters, ReWritten blurs time and reimagines an intergenerational queer love story that influenced American literature. Through dance, projection, and theater, ReWritten examines secrets, social and self-imposed boundaries, and questions what happens when you say no to a dream when you want to say yes.

Thelma and The Sleaze to Rock The Foundry

WEST STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — Independent all-female, queer southern rock band, Thelma and The Sleaze will play at The Foundry on Friday July 22 at 7:30 p.m. The group is the brain-child of lead vocalist and guitar player Lauren “LG” Gilbert. Lenox Farmers Market Adds Berkshire Organics to its Vendors

LENOX, Mass. — Every Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Lenox Chamber of Commerce hosts a weekly farmers’ market downtown at 80 Church St. Berkshire Organics, a local food and farm delivery hub, was recently added to the market’s list of vendors, expanding the overall offerings of locally grown fruits and vegetables to market shoppers. Berkshire Organics works closely with more than 70 farmers and ranchers and brings quality, locally and sustainably produced goods directly to the community via their home delivery service, and now brings some of those products to the Lenox Farmers’ Market.

The market will continue through the summer until September 30th.

See Fully Committed, the One-Woman-Show Starring Allyson Boate 

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Fully Committed by Becky Mode, directed by Jennifer Jasper, premieres Friday, July 22 at 7:30 p.m. Allyson Boate plays the main character, Sam Callahan, and plays the diverse forty other characters in the play as well.

Allyson Boate plays “Sam Callahan,” an out-of-work actor who mans the reservation line at Manhattan’s number-one restaurant. Coercion, threats, bribes, histrionics—a cast of desperate callers will stop at nothing in their zeal to land a prime reservation or the right table. Amid the barrage, Sam has her own needs to contend with—her recently widowed dad wants her home for Christmas, and she’s up for a choice part at Lincoln Center. While juggling scheming socialites, name-dropping wannabes, fickle celebrities and egomaniacal bosses, can she manage to look out for herself?

Shakespeare & Company present Hymn

LENOX, Mass. — Shakespeare & Company announces the premier of Hymn, by Lolita Chakrabarti – to be staged at the Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre at the Shakespeare & Company campus, July 22 at 3 p.m. The run lasts through August 28.

Directed by Regge Life, Hymn follows two men who meet at a funeral. One knew the deceased; one did not. Benny is a loner with a wife and children, while Gil longs to fulfill his potential.

They form a deep bond, but cracks appear as they begin to realize that true courage comes in different forms. This soulful new play, filled with music, asks what it takes to be a good father, brother, or son.

Tickets to Hymn range from $27 to $72; preview performances are $10 less and student tickets are $22. Talkbacks will be held following performances on July 28, August 3, August 11, and August 25.

The Sprague/Jaff/Ennis Trio Jazz It Up On Friday Night

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Music School is pleased to announce Music @ The Taft Presents the Sprague/Jaffe/Ennis Trio, Friday, July 22 at 7 p.m.

An exciting new ensemble featuring long time collaborators Miro Sprague (piano), Marty Jaffe (bass) and Jason Ennis (guitar), the trio performs original jazz compositions by each band member along with a few surprising interpretations of familiar tunes. Infused with influences from Brazil, classical chamber music and more, the trio’s music features intricate group improvisation, inventive arrangements, and a deep sense of beauty and groove.

The Comic Opera The Silent Woman Has Rare American Run in N.Y.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. — On Friday, July 22 at 6:30 p.m. Richard Strauss’s comic opera, The Silent Woman (“Die Schweigsame Frau”), opens at Bard SummerScape. The opera will run for five performances on July 22, 24, 27, 29 and 31.

The opera tells the madcap tale of a retired British admiral who craves the quiet life, his nephew Henry, Henry’s actress wife, and the scheming barber who intervenes between them. Featuring a counterfeit wedding designed to secure Henry’s inheritance, The Silent Woman is an intricately plotted screwball comedy in which all is ultimately forgiven.

The Silent Woman features the American Symphony Orchestra and Bard Festival Chorale under the baton of festival founder and co-artistic director Leon Botstein. Harold Wilson heads a strong cast in this new production by Christian Räth. Performances will take place in the Fisher Center on Bard’s Hudson Valley campus. In two free pre-performance Opera Talks, Räth speaks before the matinee on July 24, and Botstein before the matinee on July 27.
